Where to stay in Anchorage with 10 to 13 people

Big families, reunions, ski crews and three-generation trips: how a whole house compares with booking a block of hotel rooms, including where hotels are the better choice.

Short answer

Is a house or hotel better for a large group in Anchorage? For stays of three nights or more with 8 to 13 people, a whole house usually wins on both space and cost. You get a spacious kitchen, a large and comfortable living room, a downstairs TV and play room, your own laundry, and one table where everyone eats together. Outside there's a fire pit, and the views of Cook Inlet and the mountains come free. Hotels win for one-night stays, daily housekeeping, on-site restaurants and pools, and travelers who need an elevator or step-free rooms.

Compare the cost with your own quotes

The house rate is filled in at $700, the middle of Hillside Haven's $650 to $750 winter range. The hotel numbers are examples only. Replace them with real quotes for your dates.

The calculator applies the same tax rate to both and leaves out meals. Check current tax and fee details in your actual quotes. Cooking most breakfasts and dinners in the house is often the bigger saving for a group.

How a group of 12 or 13 fits

Three families or couples can take the two king rooms (the top-floor primary suite and bedroom 2) and the queen room. Kids and teens share the full bed, the twin, the queen futon in the office and the sofa bed in the downstairs TV room. Three full baths and a half bath keep mornings moving.

Three generations under one roof

Grandparents can take a main-floor bedroom close to the kitchen and living room, though note that some stairs are unavoidable in this house. Parents get the top-floor suite with its own deck. Kids have the downstairs TV and play room, a games shelf, a kids' table, a pack 'n play and a high chair.
